Taranaki/Wanganui Hospitality Competition 2012

The cream of the region’s hospitality talent will do battle at Witt next Monday.

About 100 entrants from secondary schools, tertiary institutes and industry will compete at the annual Taranaki/Wanganui Hospitality Competition which is being held at the polytech for the first time.

Event organiser Angela Ferguson said contestants would compete in 18 different classes or categories.

For example, there are two different cooking classes – static display and hot live kitchen. There are also competitions for front of house, barista and cocktail making.

Ms Ferguson said the contest was considered a stepping stone to bigger events in the main centres.

“They (the competitors) use the smaller regional competitions to practice and build up for national competitions in Auckland,” she said.

Up for grabs would be prizes for the first place getters supplied by the sponsors up to the value $500.

About 25 judges are coming from around the country to cast their eyes over the Taranaki/Wanganui talent.

Ms Ferguson said despite the stress of competition the event was designed to be “a fun-filled day” where contestants could show off their skills.

“It’s all about promoting the hospitality industry and for anyone interested in a career in hospitality,” she said.

Winners Sam Stevens and Shannon Nyseen from Hawera High School. With Glenn Fulcher, City and Guilds NZ Manager.
